Talk:Main Page

Hey all,

Since the main page of this wiki is very key to the user experience and in aiding naviagation, let's discuss changes before they are made. For example, instead of creating an FAQ page which would grow add infinitum, I created a Requests for addition page where people can post requests. Ideally, someone will want to provide the content and in turn, remove the request from the requests page.

Obviously, since most requests will be placed in the form of a question, it may be difficult to create a logical, easily found page name for the content (e.g. testing a coil and condensor), but I'm sure we can work it out.

Formatting and signing talk

We need to decide singular or plural (I think singular is the way to go) on a lot of stuff.

Instead of titling them withour name we can SIGN YOUR TALK:

just add four (4) tilde (~) characters after your blurb and it "fills in the love!"
THIS: ~~~~ will become THIS: Luigi 09:14, 17 Nov 2006 (MST)

Also we need to determine whether to include the moniker 'scooter' in a lot of these definitions. I am on the side of NOT including it... as in "Scooter Rally" just be "Rally", "Scooter Club" should just be "Club", "Maxi Scooter" should just be Maxi, "Project Scooter" should just be "Project", "Three wheeled scooter" should just be "Three wheeled" etc.

Oh that brings up another, should always write under spelled longhand numbers and then redirect numbers to it> Like write the article under "Two Stroke" and rediect/link "2 Stroke" and "2T" to it? I think so.

We are getting a lot of unlinked pages which are more definitions, we need to reference them to outside stuff, as it will save us from recreating the world.

I think a lot of how-tos could be first linked to archive BBS threads and then cleaned (with SE's permission).

Ok, I'm done for now. Luigi 09:14, 17 Nov 2006 (MST)

agree on all points

i agree on all points, but it becomes a problem sometimes - for example, if you only link rally instead of scooter rally, then what if rally is also a link to the rally model vespa? i'm sure there's answers for linking to multiple listings of the same word. will look around when i have the chance. also agree that we can remove "scooter" from pages, in most cases.

also agree that we spell out words that are less than ten, in accordance with ap style, ergo 2stroke becomes two-stroke, like you said. i'll change.

also, please please please check and see if there is a similar page already up before creating a new page. for example, there's multiple listings for vintage and vintage scooter- should just be one, and in accordance to what we just agreed upon, it should be vintage.

oh, and good find about the tildes! Dc-rob 14:01, 17 Nov 2006 (MST) (now if only i could figure out how to change my username!)

Hey guys. This page is really great and I feel it could help a lot of new scooterists get direction and sort out many of the confusing aspects of starting out on a scooter. I feel what we need most is not a glossary of terms, but rather an explanation and answers for many newbies' questions. Questions like "why shouldn't I buy a 50cc from GS Motorworks.com?" and "What's so great about a P200?" Some contentious questions are good to tackle. Could we start an index of questions and then go from there?

I tried to start the answer to "What types of scooters are out there?" in the scooter page and I think it's a good start.

Also, I talked to Danny of Scooterfaq.com and here's what I asked:

"A bunch of scooterists, including myself, are trying to set up a wikipedia specifically for scooters at www.scoot.net/faq/

Scoot.net is of course not for profit and has no ads, so no one would be making any money on this. It is meant only to help guide new future scooterists.

Would it be okay to use some of your content from your site? Let me know what you think."

He said: "Yeah, I've watched scoot.net develop over time and I'd be proud to help any effort on their behalf. Might even be a good excuse to seriously update that FAQ.  : /"

So it sounds like he doesn't have any problem with us using some info from his site. Although, I understand it's better to just come up with our own info and articles.

what about a model guide

I think we really need a good modern scooter model guide. It could really help a lot of people who pick up pre-owned automatics. Can we do categories for the different modern scooters? SHould we do one page per make with a lot of info or one page per model?

Check out the Derbi page and the Modern Vespa page and see what you think. Maybe we should make categories so you can see that a PK is a Vespa and is a smallframe. This needs work.

mediawiki upgraded

I've upgraded Mediawiki software to 1.6.8, please let me know if there are any problems.

about the model guide

How about someting like the "trading card" style summaries that they print in the annual Scootering "What scooter to buy" issue?

how about a featured article

like wikipedia.com has - a featured article with something interesting on this main page. Morrisseyscoot 00:34, 10 January 2007 (MST)

front page edits

I know we want to keep the page a pit static (not hacked, et al) but I would like to add

http://scoot.net/faq/Search_the_BBS

under the barn find et al.....

Fair warning

With no changes in over a year, the main page is getting stale. I am getting ready to edit the "Questions" section, merging/eliminating 'Ownership" with "New To Scootering" and "How to register a barn find" "Questions" just pushes off some pages to references off the front page and causes people to have to 'double drill' to get to good info, creating a higher chance of orphan pages. I will also add some more (5-7) of the top 25 viewed pages on the front page. As usual, I want to give a few days/week to stew before I spill this on people. Call email write, suggest..... Categories

Something is causing cerain categories not to list properly - in particular, Vespa models and Places, among others. I don't know what causing this. Googuse 09:42, 27 February 2008 (MST)
